Here are some things that you might be noticing with your child or teenager:
temper tantrums, meltdowns or low frustration tolerance
sad mood, crying, moodiness or irritability
talking back, disobeying rules or defiant behavior
difficulty sleeping or increased need for sleep
loss of appetite or over-eating
anxiety or constant worrying
being picked on by peers or difficulty getting along with friends
low self esteem or poor self image
difficulty focusing, trouble sitting still or disruptive behavior in school
poor grades or disinterest in school
I can help your child work on these behaviors in individual therapy, family therapy or a combination of both. Humor is a helpful tool in building trust which makes children and teenagers feel comfortable expressing their feelings in therapy. After building a relationship, we can begin to work on coping skills, improve confidence and learn how to make better choices and decisions.
Young children often have a difficult time verbalizing their thoughts and feelings like adults. I like to use games, art, and puppets to provide a safe place for them to express themselves. Specific interventions your child or teenager may work on in therapy include deep breathing, relaxation exercises, anger management/conflict resolution skills, behavior charts (to encourage on-task, kind and helpful behavior) and social skills training.
